Alex's Last Day of School

Alex wrapped up the school year with a little "program" of sorts that was followed by an ice cream party. Jerry, Roo, and I went to see their class "performance," and we were met with the saddest little face that you ever did see when he came around the corner to stand in his spot.

I still have no idea why he was so sad, but let me tell you, it darn near broke my heart. He was a brave little soul and stood up there with lip quivering, fighting back the tears through the entire first song, which he did not sing one word of.
_MG_6733
Once the music teacher gave him some props, he started singing and doing the motions, but there was no joy in it for him, unlike Luca, the little girl next to him, who was singing her sweet little heart out. We clapped and cheered for him, but he didn't even so much as turn up a smile. Poor little guy.

When their program was finished and he got to eat his ice cream, it was like a weight had been lifted. He was a new kid.

Here he is with his teacher, Mrs. Cole. All smiles now!

We're so excited about summer fun! I've got some fun activities planned and will be taking lots of pictures to share. Hopefully our summer adventures will be met with much more enthusiasm than the program!

Potty Training

When Alex started his Mother's Day Out program last fall, his teacher began working with him on going to the potty. When he was with her, she would take him to the bathroom and have him try to go. If he did, great. If not, that was ok, too. She just wanted to get the children into the routine.

A short time after she told me that he had his first success, I decided to try it at home - usually before bath time or when he got up in the morning. He would go when we'd take him, but I wasn't very consistent day in and day out. To be honest, I just wasn't up for the task. It seemed like such a beating to me, especially in the days when Roo was getting up once or twice a night.

A few months ago, I tried putting him in big boy underwear on the days we were staying home. We could make it with no (pee-pee) accidents, as long as I would set the timer and drag him to the toilet every 45 minutes. I got so tired of trying to stay on top of that while keeping up with a newly mobile infant. We never got to the point where he asked to go, so I decided to put it on hold for a bit longer.

I had attempted a handful of times to tackle poo-pooing in the potty. I know the signs when he's got to go – he quietly slips into the office and closes the french doors for his privacy. I would try to catch him before he started his business, and we would race to the potty. He wanted nothing to do with it. I even bought an incentive – the monster trucks from Mater's Tall Tales. We've had it sitting on the back of the potty for weeks now, but it wasn't enough to motivate him to do it.

I decided not to push it and just see how things would go. I figured this summer would be a good time to start up again because he would be turning three and maybe he would show more signs of being ready. Turns out, I didn't have to wait that long.

This past Saturday, we loaded up for a weekend trip to the North Carolina Zoo with some friends of ours and their kiddos. Two of their children are potty trained. Alex must have been paying attention because at the hotel Saturday night he told me he needed to pee-pee. This is the first time he had ever told us he needed to go. I said ok, but then kind of dismissed it. So he heads into the bathroom, takes his shorts and diaper off, throws his diaper in the trash, climbs up on the potty and does his business, flushes the toilet, and is attempting to put his shorts back on when I find him. I. was. amazed. Seriously.

Sunday rolls around, and once again – at a restaurant this time – he tells us he needs to go. Jerry takes him, and sure enough, success. Then we get home that afternoon, and he has taken all of his clothes off to put his swimsuit on. While he's naked he runs to tell me, "I need to poo-poo! I don't want to do it on the floor!" So I run to take him to the bathroom, and what do you know?! HE WAS SO PROUD! I was screaming and cheering and giving him high-fives. You'd have thought we won the lottery. It was a big day!

Afterwards, he kept saying to me, "Mommy, I'm so excited about my monster trucks." So sweet.

Now that he's showing a real interest, we are in full-on potty training mode, and he is doing great. I feel motivated and encouraged to keep it moving along now that I see he's able to identify when he needs to go. I'm still a little nervous about our first outing, but I know that we'll just have to make pit-stops right before we leave the house and right before we leave the store. We still do diapers at nap time and night time until I can see that he's waking up dry. While I'm in no rush, I will be excited when we're down to only buying one set of diapers again. =)

Cheerio Tower

The other day I was perusing Pinterest for activities to keep little hands busy while I make dinner/clean the kitchen/fold laundry. I came across this easy peasy lemon squeezy idea: The cheerio tower.
_MG_6572
Stick a spaghetti noodle (although I used a wooden skewer for a bit more stability) into a ball of play-doh. Stack cheerios onto the noodle.
_MG_6592
Oh, and eat the leftover Cheerios after the tower is built. And maybe a few while stacking. =)
_MG_6576
Great little activity to help develop fine motor skills and keep the Little Man occupied while I did some chores.
_MG_6590
He was so proud with the tower he built. =)

The Little Men's Big Adventures – Strawberry Pickin'

_MG_6443
This year marked our third annual trip to the strawberry patch. I thought for sure Alex would be into picking the strawberries now that he's a little older. Turns out, just like in years past, he was only interested in eating them out of the two buckets Jerry worked to fill up.
_MG_6445
He was interested in running up and down (and across) the rows with Charlotte Ann, however. They kept one another entertained when they weren't eating the berries.
_MG_6435
Roo-bear decided that he wasn't going to miss out on the fun Alex was having – he enjoyed the fruits of Daddy's labor, too. =)

A few other highlights from this year's trip...
Snacking on kettle corn:

Alex taking his first turn behind the wheel:

...and Alex and Charlotte taking a stumble into "Platypus Pond." I have no pictures of the stumble because, well, it was a little chaotic. The kids couldn't see the edge of the pond because of how the grass grew over it. Charlotte went in first and managed to stop once she realized she had hit water. Alex, on the other hand, tripped when he stepped in and kind of did a roll onto his back. He kept his head out of the water, but the rest of him was soaked. That water was cold, and he cried a lot. Lucky for us, Charlotte let him borrow her spare set of clothes so that we could stop for lunch:

Big adventures happening all the time around these parts. =)

Roary and Roo - 11 months

_MG_6338
Do not turn your back on this little guy for even a second. He will nose-dive out of a chair, climb to the top of the stairs alone, pull himself up on the coffee table, dig trash out of the trash can – he is BUSY!!!
_MG_6345
I tried giving him a book as a distraction to keep him in the chair for his Roary and Roo picture. He loved it...for a few seconds. And then he was ready to move on.
_MG_6346
The photoshoots are getting shorter. He has no interest in sitting still for me to take his picture.
_MG_6353
I'm better off trying to capture the "slice of life" moments.
_MG_6420

Roo does NOT want to be fed – he only wants to feed himself. I let him have at it with the squeezable applesauce the other day. I expected a big mess, but he did surprisingly well. Hardly a drop on him when he finished. After months and months of working on signing "more" and "all done" with Roo, he's finally got it down. He can also finally use his cup without any assistance turning it up.
_MG_6403

Standing all by himself for longer periods of time. Still no first steps, but it won't be long now.
_MG_6413

He loves getting into anything his big brother has. I can tell that "share with your brother" is going to be a phrase that we will wear out around here.

It's so hard for me to believe that this little guy is nearly a year old!! Love our sweet Roo-bear.

Today's Little Adventure - A Treasure Walk

Our days usually go more smoothly if we have activities planned. Anyone else? Today we packed up for a scavenger-hunt treasure walk.
_MG_6360
I made a little checklist of items to look for and packed binoculars, a net, a crayon and paper for leaf rubbings, a baby jar to collect water from "Crocodile Creek," and a little cup for any other odds and ends we might end up with – because we always end up with bonus treasures.

We shared our little adventure with Charlotte and Emma. Alex and Charlotte collected their water from "Crocodile Creek" with Lauren's help.
_MG_6361
Treasure hunting is hard work - just ask this crew. Thanks to Miss Lauren who packed a snack for the kiddos! Popcorn, strawberries and grapes for the older ones while Roo and Emma munched on goldfish and cheese nips.
_MG_6395
After two hours of searching high and low for our treasures, we decided these guys were worn out and that we'd better call it a day. Just in the nick of time, too – as we loaded the car, the rain set in.

When we got home I asked Alex what his favorite treasure was and do you know what he said? If you guessed, "the rocks," you'd be right. And his favorite sighting? The "crocodile" he thought he saw in the creek. Awesome adventures!

Little Boy Joy - Day 30

And just like that, the 30 days are up.

I've been digging the single-photo (although, occasionally I snuck in a couple of extra)/one-to-two sentence caption approach. Short and sweet seems to work better with my schedule these days. And with my brain that has turned into complete mush. I may keep at it. We'll see. ;-)

Little Boy Joy - Day 26

Alex says to Andrew the other day: "Roo-bear Ryan! Obey your mother!"
And another time: "Help your mother out. Ok, Roo-bear?"

Little Boy Joy - Day 25

_MG_6177
The bedtime routine is the same every night. The cars are parked on the floor near the headboard so that they can get their rest, too. They are lined up perfectly. We read at least two stories, sometimes more if there's time. Then, there are three spots of water to make with bottled water: one on the pillow, one on the sheets, and one on the pjs. (He loves to suck his thumb and rub the wet spots.) After the spots have been made, Alex takes a drink, we turn the turtle nightlight on with the blue light (not green or orange as in days past), we say our prayers, we turn on the fan, and then it is time for bed. Now, you may alter a few of these steps, but don't ever mess with the three spots of water and the drink. Roo has his ear; Alex has his wet spots.

Little Boy Joy - Day 24

Just shy of turning 11 months old, this sweet boy took off walking behind his push toy for the first time. He is so eager to keep up with his big brother. Won't be long now...
